The Wipro Project in Bangalore is into its 3rd year and 26 schools and 400 teachers have been participating. 110 teachers have completed the certified training as well as the follow-up support year. Another 120 teachers are undergoing the follow-up support into the second academic year and 165 teachers are currently undertaking the 3rd phase of the project.

The Focus of TTF’s Wipro Applying Thought In Schools Teacher Development Program:

Is to enhance the teaching-learning process in the classroom and actively encourage collaborative learning and creative thinking abilities among students.

To bring about this change in the teaching learning process TTF focuses on developing in teachers a mix of three distinct types of skills:
  1. Occupational Skills – subject expertise, teaching methods
  2. Personal Skills and Attitudes – ability to get on with people
  3. Managerial Skills – Planning & organizing, communicating, motivating, evaluating
Framework of the Training
Overall structure
  • 9 Workshop Modules (14 Days) – which are carefully sequenced, interactive, process- oriented, while providing some theoretical basis. The emphasis is on building new skills and enhancing personal attitudes of the participating teachers.
  • 14 Days of School-Based Support – which include Facilitator Observation and Feedback, Peer Observation, Student Feedback, Self-Assessment, Demo classes and the Teacher Portfolio

Getting To Know The Workshop Modules:

Module 1- Teachers’ Personal Development – 1 Day

Content:
  • Exploring One’s Personal Values
  • Exploring One’s Personal Vision
  • Understanding Our Self Esteem
  • The Need for Personal Renewal – Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, Creative & Spiritual.
Module 2- Time Management – ½ Day

Content:
  • Maximizing teachers’ time at school, especially the 40 mins. in the classroom – Using the Time Management Matrix for personal and professional benefit, Classroom Planning & Management

Module 3 – Reflecting On Teaching – 1 ½ Days

Content:
  • Selected Readings About Education
  • Critiquing Classroom Practices using video clippings
  • Exploring Mental Models & Beliefs About Teaching
  • Identifying Successful Learning Characteristics
  • Understanding Learning Styles
  • Confronting Personal Beliefs
  • Understanding Teacher Competencies & Teacher Strategies
Module 4 – Connect : Communication Skills in the Classroom – 2 Days

Content:
  • Human Relations – Checklist
  • What is Interpersonal Communication?
  • Factors that affect or distort personal interactions
  • Active Listening Skills – Body Posture/ Language, Questioning, Reflection Of Content, Expression Of Feeling, Reflection Of Feeling
  • Confrontation & Handling Conflicts.
  • Carl Rogers’ conditions for positive interactions
  • Communication Styles
  • Role Play
Module 5 – GrouPower : Group Work & Collaborative Learning – 1 ½ days

Content:
  • Why Collaboration?
  • What is Group Work & Collaborative Learning in the Classroom? Understanding Group Work
  • Stages in Group Work and Skills for Group Work
  • Roles & functions In Group Work
  • Planning for Curriculum Based Group Work
  • Assessment Of Group Work
Module 6 – Subject Enrichment – 3 Days

Content:
  • Big Ideas of the Subject
  • The purpose of teaching the Subject – looking at international Learning Standards in the subject
  • Teaching Methodology specific for the concerned subject
  • Evaluating current textbooks
  • Effective Use of IT
  • Learning Resources
Module 7 – The Learning Environment – 1 Day

Content:
  • Practical, creative ideas to make their own low cost subject related teaching aids
  • The Versatile Over Head Projector
  • Newspaper – The Living Textbook
  • Mobiles & Bulletin Boards to brighten & add movement to the classroom, Corridors & Common spaces
Module 8– Teaching For Active Learning - 2 Days

Content:
  • Understanding Active Learning –What , Why & The Importance.
  • Understanding Multiple Intelligences
  • The Dimensions Of Learning Model – a practical framework for active learning that provides a range of teaching/learning strategies
  • Lesson Planning using a specially designed TTF lesson plan template
Module 9– What Can they Do with What they Know: towards better Assessment strategies – 1½ days

Content:
  • Understanding Assessment – Formative Vs. Summative
  • Types of Multiple Intelligences & Assessment Strategies
  • Need for Performance Criteria
  • What are Rubrics? Role of Rubrics in Assessment
  • Bloom’s Taxonomy for developing and assessing Thinking skills
  • Exploring Alternative Assessment Methods/ Strategies

B. School-based Support – the unique feature of the Wipro-TTF Project

Objectives of School Based Support:
  • Helping teachers transfer learnings from the workshops into effective practice in the classroom
  • The sessions are designed to employ a range of learning strategies from the workshops
Structure:
  • 14 days of School Based Support per school
  • Facilitator Observations spread across the year; Student Feedback. Peer Observations; ‘Requests for support’– in lesson planning, handling difficult children etc.; the Teacher Portfolio
