Message From Chairman
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Every entity has the responsibility of improving the system
which it inhabits and contribute positively towards its development.
Wipro is a large stakeholder in the society and draws its resources
from it. Apart from providing quality products at economical
prices, employment to thousands of people and tax revenue to
the government, it is vital that it contributes to the growth
of the society. In
a vast country like India, there are multiple issues which need
intervention. We have decided to focus single-mindedly on "education"
as the key issue. Education is faced with issues of both “access”
and "quality". Access refers to availability of schools
nearby, infrastructure like classrooms, toilets etc, availability
of teachers, enrolment and attendance etc. By Quality I mean
the quality of learning which takes place in the school. For
instance, is the child learning at the deep level or she is
simply cramming; does the education lead to development of life-skills
such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving, how
to learn etc.; does education help the child discover and realize
has potential; and so on. The quality issue is equally relevant
for both rural and urban schools. We have decided to focus on
the Quality of Learning at the school education level.
Keeping both the rural and urban schools in mind, we have launched
two separate initiatives in education. The first one, launched
in my personal capacity, the Azim
Premji Foundation, addresses the issue of quality of
learning in rural areas. The second, an initiative of Wipro
Limited – ‘Wipro Applying
Thought in Schools’ - has been designed to address
the quality issue in urban areas.
“Wipro Applying Thought in Schools” is engaging
with various stakeholders like Teachers, Principals, Parents,
Education Boards, Employers and Higher Education institutions
to debate the direction of change and to enable change to happen.
It is an initiative to bring together people who believe that
change is needed in the way teaching and assessment happens,
and those who believe that education system should keep pace
with changing times.
The
future is not what will happen but what we make it to be.
