1. Why is Wipro doing this project?

Wipro believes every entity has a responsibility to improve the system it inhabits. Wipro is a key member of the Indian society and is favorably positioned to create positive impact. As rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world”. As to why are we focusing on education, we believe that India is at a stage of development where there are multiple issues, all equally important and urgent – health care, infrastructure, water. But Wipro believes education is the fundamental enabler of economic development and sustainable change. Hence, Wipro has decided to focus single-mindedly on "education" as the key issue.

2. What is the initiative’s structure?

The initiative aims at improving the quality of education which would require us to work with various stakeholders. Wipro is working with the various stakeholders in 3 broad ways:

1. Intervention: In the School Engagement model, Wipro is working with the teachers, principals and the parents to show them the need for change and make them capable to bring about this change. The engagement with teachers is through a series of workshops which hone their teaching skills. The School Based Support ensures the correct implementation of what has been learnt in the workshops. In the Education Leadership Program, the Principals go through a series of workshops which aim towards capacity building of educators in leadership roles, helps them to create a facilitative environment and lead the change processes in their institution. The Parent Program takes the parents through a 4 half day workshop series which helps changing their worldview of true purpose of education and how they can help their child in the learning process.

2. Network: Wipro is bringing together those who desire change and have the capacity to help bring about the change. Analogous to the synergy of Internet nodes, the attempt will be to continuously increase the reach of this web

3. Advocate: Wipro is in a good position to advocate the urgent need for change among a larger section of stakeholders. This advocacy should create awareness that the current system is not effective and show ‘what to change to’ and ‘how to change’. This should also expand the breadth and width of stakeholders that are part of the network Advocacy would provide radical stimulus to cascade the desire for change. The network will channelize and synergise the resultant energy. Intervention gives us the foundation to build on

3. Who conducts the training?

Wipro has partnered with organizations who have expertise in the field of education and who are also trying to make a difference in the existing framework in various capacities. The training material has been extensively researched so as to include the recent tools and techniques. Each of the trainers are ex-teachers/ ex-principals and have designed the course keeping in mind the different constraints teachers/principals would face while implementing the skills learnt during the workshops.

4. Who can take this training?

The Education Leadership Program is open to all principals/ vice principals/ headmistress and school management who wish to bring about a change in their schools. The program is also open to schools who are not a part of the Teacher Program

The Teacher Program is designed for the teachers teaching upto classes 8. Majority of the teachers engaged in teaching students of the above mentioned classes have to undergo the training as a few teachers cannot bring about the desired change.

The Parent Program is open for all parents in the cities where the program has been rolled out.

5. Why is there a fee attached to this project?

The main reason to make this a 'paid' program is to build in seriousness on the part of the participants as anything which is given free is not valued. This also builds a tremendous pressure on us to deliver the best possible quality and gives the participants the right to demand more from us.

6. What is fee attached to this project?

The fee varies from city to city but is highly subsidized by Wipro. Wipro bears the entire cost of the development of the content and subsidizes the training cost by picking up 2/3rd of the entire cost.

7. Won't newer methods add to the burden of the teachers?

In course of the training, teachers do have to put in some extra effort. But the ultimate aim is to reduce their workload by enabling learners take on more responsibility for learning.

All the strategies used actually helps a teacher to be more organized in her work, manage her time more efficiently and be a more effective facilitator for her students.

8. Why is the project targeting only teachers of 3-7 standards?

Beyond standard 8, teachers get too busy focusing on the boards examination and therefore less open to trying out something now. Upto standard 8, schools have lot more flexibility in their syllabus.

9. Is it an IT program on how to use computers?

No, Wipro Applying Thought In Schools is not an IT program. We believe that IT is only one of the tools for the teachers. This training is an attempt to bring about a sustainable change in the way teacher understand how children learn and therefore redefine her role as one who creates learning experience.

10. How is Wipro's effort different from Intel Teach to the Future?

Intel's focus is on using IT in education and incorporating the same in lessons. Wipro's efforts are more broad based with emphasis on bringing about change in the entire teaching-learning process, lesson delivery and attitude of teachers. Wipro's project is a professional development project for teachers. It looks at developing various aspects of a teacher like occupational skills (subject expertise, teaching style etc.), personal skills and attitudes (interpersonal relationship - with students and other teachers) and managerial skills (planning and organising lessons, communicating, evaluating etc.)

11. How is ' WIPRO APPLYING THOUGHT IN SCHOOLS' different from 'AZIM PREMJI FOUNDATION'?
Both organizations have similar goals, that of improving the quality of education.

The Foundation as an implementation organization and partners with state governments working in government schools space.

Wipro Applying Thought In Schools partners with social organizations and works with schools in all spaces, urban, semi-urban and rural.
