Katha
A "profit-for-all" nonprofit organization, Katha works in the broad areas of language, culture and translation, as well as poverty alleviation. Story and storytelling are the two powerful tools we use as publishers, teachers and agents of change.

Founded in 1988 by Geeta Dharmarajan, Katha is one of India’s leading publishing houses and NGOs. Our work includes storytelling, the publication of translations and children’s books, as well as literacy, education and community development.

With it’s focus on education, Katha runs a school for slum-children, as well as the Tamasha School on Wheels for the street children in New Delhi. There are also Katha-Lisu Schools situated on the India-Myanmar border and in Arunachal Pradesh.

An organization committed to community development, Katha is strongly pro-poor. More than 1500 women are members of the Maa Mandal. Besides this, the Bapu Mandal, the Balika Mandal and the Shopkeepers Guild work closely for the economic resurgence of the community.

Swanirvar
Swanirvar started work in 5 villages in the North 24 Parganas district near Calcutta in December 1989. It has always been guided by the philosophy that while development is primarily concerned with people, it must involve the indigenous people of that region. Towards that goal, it started with developing the following broad areas:

Vidya Bhawan Society
Vidya Bhavan is a group of institutions that started with the founding of a basic school in 1931. The founder, M.S. Mehta, had a vision of providing quality education to non-elite sections of society with the aim of making socially responsible citizens. The Vidya Bhavan Education Center was established in 1994. The center is a resource unit to facilitate cross fertilization of ideas on pedagogy. Azim Premji Foundation
‘Transform the lives of millions of children in India by catalyzing universalisation of elementary education’
The Foundation works in partnership with the Government and is focused on schools in rural areas
> 3700 villages and equal number of schools in 17 blocks in Karnataka
> 500 villages and equal number of schools in 10 mandals in AP
> 300 municipal schools in 3 cities in Gujarat
During April 2002 - June 2003 , the Foundation will be training close to 1,00,000 education functionaries
Programmes

> Capacity Building for UEE - The key to effective capacity building is to ensure that each school has its own workable plan of action. The Foundation aims to train stakeholders to develop their own plans at school level
> Learning Guarantee Program - This program is an attempt towards making “delivering of learning” the vehicle for accountability in elementary education
> Accelerated Learning Program - The program will handhold the mainstream out-of-school children and develop learning pace. This will help them effectively cope with an established school routine and prevent dropout of mainstreamed children from school
